Agreed.  The hackerspace census is exactly what you are trying to do yourself.
Just help contribute (I promise I will ! ) by going through the list of spaces near you and trying to contact them and get the existing list updated.

Good that you want to improve the current list. There is an ongoing activity to keep the list updated, see https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Hackerspace_Census_2019 how you can attribute to this. 

As mentioned by others, starting a new (manual) list is IMHO not the best way. Better is to improve what we have already.
